Reform NY Homeschool Law!
Make home education laws in New York State less onerous and less intrusive for families!

As a result of the #pandemic, more families than ever before are considering homeschooling their children. According to a recent RealClear Opinion Research survey, 40% of families are more likely to #homeschool or virtual school after lockdowns.
New York is one of the most difficult states in which to homeschool our children. With required subject matter, quarterly reporting regulations, and mandatory annual assessments, parents do not have the freedom to choose the type of education that is right for our own families - even at home. Home education should be a viable option for all families, but New York State law makes it feel impossible!
New York State recently passed a temporary ruling for homeschool students allowing annual assessments in the form of written narratives regardless of grade level (as opposed to mandatory standardized testing which were required every other year). The purpose of this #petition is to urge New York State to make this a permanent change to home education law - or better yet, eliminate the requirement for conducting and reporting annual assessments all together. Parents are competent #educators and we are best suited to decide how to educate our children and whether they are progressing adequately. We do not need New York State breathing down our necks and adding to the stress of educating our children at home. Homeschooling represents a huge financial burden to many; we pay extremely high school taxes and yet reap none of the benefits or access to resources available to public school students. And on top of that, we live in constant fear that the local superintendent will take issue with our personal education choices and put us on "probation." New York State should not require parents to report anything at all in regards to educating our own children (disclosing curriculum choices, progress reports, assessment results, etc.). Many other states do not have these kinds of outrageous mandates.
Make home education laws in New York State less onerous and less intrusive for families!
